Within the world of furniture and design, trends and themes develop constantly over time. These are often set by industry leaders and then imitated and tweaked throughout the market, and the way this process ebbs and flows – and is impacted by customer choice, of course – is one of the most interesting themes for this realm.
At Ivy Interiors, our design professionals are experts at navigating the latest trends and themes in the furniture world. We can help you separate true trendsetters from pretenders; among the former category is Norwalk Furniture, a staple of furniture production that’s been around for over a century. At 2019’s High Point Market, Norwalk will introduce three emerging color trends that help signal certain shifts in some popular styles here – let’s go over what the process is for determining these palates, plus give some detail on each.

The process of determining these themes is a detailed, creative one that stretches back years. It involves trips from professionals around the globe, tracking important developments in this world – for instance, while grey base colors are still extremely popular virtually everywhere, warmer brown tones are beginning to show up more and more often as a neutrality alternative. This is a theme that’s reflected in the designs.
In addition, it’s been found that blue and green undertones are soothing and also may present good neutral options. This is in complement to maximalist designs like vignettes and bold colors.
The Tidewater design being unveiled describes a soft, blue teal with a small green undertone, as we alluded to above. The name is meant to convey a refreshing feel, and that’s exactly what the theme is going for as well – one can walk into a room with this theme and instantly feel relaxed and at home.
The blue used here is tinted with silver, bringing a slow vibe to any room. The Tidewater style can be used in both modern and traditional settings, and matches well with several different brown and grey neutrals. If you want to get a bit adventurous, consider matching it with charcoal or granite tones for a darker contrast.
We mentioned the rise of soft browns as a new neutral, and the Toast & Tea format is looking to capitalize on this area. This theme involves using various warm neutrals, from espresso down to nutmeg or even café au lait, to set as the base color and then built out from there.
Named after the song from the band Queen, one that’s undergoing a modern renaissance, the Bohemian Rhapsody style is a bold, colorful theme. It’s a firmly maximalist style, one meant to be eclectic and make an immediate impression. It utilizes royal blue and jewel tones, plus tactile fabrics and loud patterns. It can absolutely be used in a traditional design format, though it’s more often seen in modern themes.
