When designing any room in your home, particularly those that will be used for social gatherings, meals or similar needs, seating is a vital consideration. There are a number of different seating formats and options out there, and choosing the right combination can have a big impact on both aesthetics and personal comfort.
At Ivy Interiors, we’ll help you select furniture for any room in your home as part of our interior design services, including a wide selection of seating options. From dining room chairs to living room sofas and everything in between, we have all your seating needs covered. One common question we get from those looking to design a dining room, bar, kitchen or similar area: Should I choose stools or standard chairs? Let’s define each of these in this context, plus look at a few factors you might consider while making your choice.

Let’s look at a standard definition for each of these terms:
When making your choice between stools and chairs for a given area, you comfort is obviously one of the top factors. If you’re looking for seats you and others in the home plan to utilize on a regular basis, we might suggest chairs or at least stools that include backrests, mostly for comfort reasons. For short-term or infrequent use areas like bars or others, consider stools that offer a greater range of design options.
In addition, consider the overall décor you’re going for with your furniture placement. Are you a minimalist looking to keep lots of space open? In this case, simple wood or metal stools will to the trick. On the flip side, are you trying to design a formal dining room for special parties? Here, you’d generally be better served with finely upholstered chairs that set the tone.
If you’re looking to save space in a smaller room, stools are a great asset. They are often thinner and take up less space, plus backless options are very easy to move around and store in plenty of areas if you need to. Chairs are a bit bulkier, so you want to keep this in mind if you plan to move things around often in the room in question.
Now, it’s important to note that you don’t necessarily have to choose between one or the other here. There are plenty of room formats where both options will work well and complement each other, and there are also several hybrid options, such as bar-height stools that come with backs and arms for comfort.
