Choosing Recliner Type

For starters, you might be shocked at how many different types of recliners are available depending on your precise needs. All of the following are potential options for you:
• Pushback recliners: One of the traditional options, this recliner requires you to hold the arms and then push against the back to recline. There is no lever or handle. These options are usually smaller, some with a footrest but some without.
• Lever or handle recliners: Options that have a lever, handle or a pull loop to trigger the reclining mechanism in either direction.
• Power recliners: Recliners with a built-in button and electrical hook-ups, reclining automatically with several positioning options. Modern choices here will include preset positions, USB charging and often even massage features.
• Lift chair recliners: Fully automated power chairs, often designed for people with a handicap or mobility issues to help them sit down and stand up more easily. These chairs sometimes qualify for medical device reimbursements.
• Leg-only recliners: Models where the back does not move a tall, but a footrest can extend out for leg support. These are usually on the more affordable end.
• 2- or 3-position recliners: Recliners that have two or three designated positions – usually upright, reclined, or leg-only.
• Lay flat recliners: Those that can recline all the way back for a flat position.
• Wall hugger recliners: Recliners meant to be placed near a wall or other major furniture, with forward extensions so they don’t contact anything behind them.
• Swivel recliners: These options have a swivel base, allowing the user to pivot as needed.
• Rocker recliners: Recliners that can rock while upright, plus may be able to do so in certain reclining positions as well. Some rockers may also have swivel options included.

Recliner Style

In addition to the numerous operating types available, there are also several distinct design styles out there for recliners:
• Traditional: Generally made from leather or another microfiber fabric, these options have thick padding for a luxurious experience.
• Transitional: With elements like roll arms, stitching enhancements and nailhead trim.
• Contemporary: Modern recliners tend to have angled edges, with tailored lines and sleeker designs.
• Club chair: Complete with a high leg recliner, this option appears like an accent chair, but with reclining capabilities.
